The course runs on the 3rd Friday evening from January – August 2020

The tutor Jonathan Garratt has a wealth of knowledge and experience having grown up with honeybees.

He has been a Seasonal Bee Inspector for the National Bee Unit since 2001.

This course is aimed at people who are considering taking up beekeeping and want to learn more about bees in general.

It will give you the necessary information and handling skills to take on your own honeybees during the course.

The course aims to provide a good background into practical beekeeping with several sessions being outdoors with the bees,

learning how to handle honeybees and the hive and what we are viewing

We will learn about sympathetic beekeeping: working with honeybees in a more natural way

Learn the mainstays of beekeeping including the different hive options and which is most suitable for you;

learn frame and hive construction and siting of hives

See how honey is processed from the hive to the table and how beeswax is processed and its possible uses

Find out where to get bees and what equipment is needed (and what is not needed!)

Advice on books, magazines & information on the internet

Discover the importance and benefits of bees in the environment and the problems they are encountering
