Manufactured at Rand, Lincolnshire, the Bees on a Budget National Hive with 14" x 12" brood body is made from sustainably sourced, economy grade British Cedar. Therefore, the timber may have solid live knots and other minor imperfections. All frames are also made from economy grade British cedar.

The National hive with 14" x 12" brood body is also available in Canadian Western Red Cedar, for self-assembly at home or ready assembled. All National hive parts, made from Canadian or British cedar, are compatible and interchangeable. The dimensions are the same. Although please note that the 14" x 12" brood body requires larger frames than the standard size national brood body.

You will find this bottom bee spaced, single walled hive in use all over the British Isles. It is still the most popular by far, perhaps because one of the distinctive features of national beehives is the use of standard frame sizes, making it easier for beekeepers to interchange frames between hives. It is an attractively designed hive with rebates (grooves) that serve as substantial hand grips, and frames with longer lugs for ease of handling. The design of national hives facilitates good ventilation and provides protection for the bees against the elements and pests.

It is based on square boxes (460mm): a brood body and (usually) two supers. The brood box is where the queen bee lays her eggs and the worker bees raise the young bees.  Above the brood box, the supers are added to allow the bees to store surplus honey, which can then be harvested by the beekeeper.

This version of the National hive has an extra deep brood body. The larger size compared to the standard National brood body allows for more space for the bees to raise brood and store honey and pollen. The use of a 14" x 12" brood body can provide several benefits, including increased colony population, improved overwintering capability, and higher honey production potential. However, it also requires more resources from the beekeeper, such as larger frames and increased hive management. Overall, the decision to use a 14" x 12" brood body in a National hive depends on various factors, including the beekeeper's preferences, local climate conditions, and the specific needs of the bee colony.

The complete hive comprises:

  • Full instructions
  • Nails and glue (if required for self-assembly)
